The city of Miami in the US, has reportedly gone six weeks without a murder, the very first time that has happened since 1957. According to the Miami Herald, Miami, once dubbed as America's 'murder capital,' did not report a homicide from February 17 to April 12 and the Miami police say there has been a 33 percent decrease in homicides since March 17, when Miami county Mayor Carlos Gimenez issued a stay-at-home order to reduce Coronavirus spread. But Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina has warned that these numbers are hypothetical and not an accurate representation of crime in Miami. According to Colina, there are unreported domestic violence and child abuse cases going on now that the city is in quarantine.

The Ogun state police command have arrested a herbalist, Lajuwon Ogunleye and his wife Adetutu Apalaya on charges of conspiring and killing their 7-year-old son, Pelumi Apalaya, alongside one Fatai Sefiu.  The suspects were arrested following their neighbours' suspicion of the little boy being used for ritual, as he reportedly slumped and died without being sick.  They were reportedly monitored by residents of the community after they took the boy to the bush for burial. Nigerians have taken to social media to express worry over alleged mysterious deaths in Kano state which has reportedly risen to 640 in one week.  Though the state was on lockdown for 7 days, it was recently relaxed for a day by Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje following the declaration of Ramadan.  While the mysterious disease killing people in the state has been linked to Coronavirus by many, others have countered it and also pointed out that it may be something else.  A health worker who spoke to The Cable said there is a high level of suspicion that top government officials in the state have been exposed to the virus. “Things are in disarray here, and there is no well structured response to COVID-19. A woman, Nene Steve, has been arrested by the operatives of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly killing her maid, Joy Aboel. The Madam of the house was accused of having beaten the maid to death and then went ahead to hang her in order to make it look like a suicide. The incident occurred at 18, Ogundola Street, Bariga, Lagos. Spain has seen a large spike in number of new Coronavirus cases after 6,740 infections were recorded in the last 24 hours.  The thousands of positive tests bring the Spanish total from 213,024 to 219,764, the biggest increase since 7,026 were recorded on April 4.  According to Spanish authorities, the increase of cases jumped up following the use of antibody tests, which have added nearly 17,000 people to the total since they were introduced.  In other news, the daily death toll in Spain fell to 367, the lowest since March 21, taking the total from 22,157 to 22,524.  'We have achieved the goal of a deceleration and slowdown for this week but we remain in a hard phase of the epidemic,' health minister Salvador Illa said yesterday. 

A policeman who is a member of the Rivers state taskforce on COVID-19 lockdown, has allegedly killed a female colleague who is a nursing mother, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital. The incident reportedly happened inside a market at Eneka in Port Harcourt, today April 23. According to reports, the policewoman was attempting to stop the said police officer and other members of the taskforce from destroying the wares of the market women, when the erring officer opened fire. The bullet however hit the policewoman, killing her. Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner for Police, Joseph Mukan, said the erring policeman has been arrested, disarmed and subjected to orderly room trial. “A policeman attached to the taskforce did the shooting. He was shooting anyhow and in the process killed another policewoman. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed this to newsmen at the end of the extraordinary summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West Africa States. A pregnant COVID-19 patient was told by doctors that the baby in her womb had died due to complications from the deadly virus. However, she surprised doctors when she gave birth and the baby was alive. The pregnant mother gave birth on Wednesday, April 22, after doctors told her that she has to deliver her dead baby. Fortunately, when the baby was born, she was alive. Sharing the news to Twitter, the sister of the new mum wrote: "My sister has been in the hospital due to COVID 19. She was pregnant. A man identified as Peter Alateke has been arraigned before the Chief Magistrates’ Court, Owo, Ondo State, for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl. The defendant, who is said to be a pastor, was said to be taking care of the secondary school pupil, who is suffering from epilepsy, in his church located at Ehinogbe, Owo, but he was said to have raped the teenager, who allegedly developed complications in her private parts and anus. Alateke was arraigned on one count of having an unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor, but pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Mr Kola Olawoye, informed the court that the state was ready to take over the case. The counsel for the defendant, Mr Remi Adetula, urged the court to grant the defendant bail as he would always be available whenever he was needed.
